ネパールから日本に移住して、旅行業界で働いて6年目になります。
四国に来られてお遍路の文化について、どう感じましたか？
自分の国はお釈迦様が生まれた場所なので、仏教に関心はありました。古いお寺を見るのも好きです。
ただ正直なことを言うと、この仕事をするに当たって最初はちょっと嫌だなと思ってました。何でかというと、白衣が嫌いだったからです。自分の国の文化では親が死んだときに着るのが白い服なのです。だから、親が両方生きてるのに白衣を着るのはなあ…と思いました。
このような、日本人では分からない文化の違いにる感じ方の違いを持ってる事は、逆にお遍路の仕事をする上では強みだと思っています。
外国の方の目線に立った対応を心がけています。
カナルさんが対応した外国からのお遍路参加した方の印象はどうでした？
元々お遍路にとても興味があり、知識のある人が多い印象です。外国の方でお遍路を知っていて興味を持っている人の中には、道なども全部調べて参加する人までいます。
また、お寺の事以外のちょっとしたこと花だったり石だったりといったことを聞かれることがとても多いです。
旅行の移動中も、見たこといろんなことを聞いてこられます。例えば11月に稲刈りした後に茎の部分を田んぼに残しているのはなぜ？とか、日本人だと見慣れた光景についても外国の方からは珍しいようで、そのような文化や景色の違いについての質問を色々されます。
お遍路については自分も色々勉強しているのでお答えできます。それ以外の、お寺やお遍路とは関係ないことも聞かれるので説明するためにいろんなことを調べます。自分も新しいことに気付くのでとてもやりがいがあります。
お遍路の話をしつつ、他に興味をもったことに対して答えられることがポイントになってきますね。
もちろん大前提としてお遍路のことを知っていないといけないです。けれど、外国の人は違った目線があるのでそこを伝えていくのが大事です。SNSでお寺のことプラスで生活や景色といったところを上げるとみてくれる人がいます。でも、北欧の人たちからしたらアジアとしてひとまとまりに見ることが多いです。アジアでも日本とインドじゃ違いもあり、具体的になにが違うのかっていうのを伝えるのも大事です。
日本人の人はベースを知っている人がいるので広く浅く説明する感じでいいけども、中国とかアジアの人とヨーロッパ・アメリカの人たちは質問に答えるとまた違った角度から質問が返ってくるので深いところまで説明が必要です。

四国お遍路はお寺だけじゃないのでお寺だけじゃないお遍路が魅力なので、ぜひお寺だけじゃないお遍路って何？という風に知りたいと思ってきて欲しいです。

When did you come to Japan?
I came to Japan in 2013 as an international student. It’s amazing to think how soon it will be 8 years of being here in Japan. I’ve mostly lived and worked in Takamatsu for most of my time but also gained some working experience in Tokyo as well.
What did you think of Ohenro Culture at first?
My country is where the Buddha was born so I feel I am somehow already involved in Ohenro culture. I really love to visit old temples and I became further interested in Ohenro while encountering it in Japan.
At first it was a bit difficult for me however, as the white vest pilgrims wear is actually a kind of mourning clothes in my country for when one’s parents die.
It is really amazing how many different cultures and view points I encounter in this industry.
Dealing with tourists with a foreigner’s perspective.
How was the impression of your international tourists when they went in Ohenro tours?
There are some people who are very interested in Ohenro Culture before they even come to Japan, so they already know a lot. There are also people who have researched about the trail, temples as well as the nearby sightseeing spots along the pilgrimage route.
There are also some people who are interested in smaller things around the temple such as nature they have never seen before in their home country or the traditions and culture of the locals. I once had some tourists ask about the local agricultural
traditions and rice harvesting. These are things that Japanese tourists never ask so it is always a surprise to see what catches the attention of different people.
The tourists who come on the Ohenro trips are not only interested in just the temples but also the things they see on the way; beautiful forests, small towns and shops, fellow pilgrims, and all the other things that people may encounter while walking through Shikoku. Ohenro related works, such as guiding tourists, planning, cooperating with local businesses, etc. are well-worth doing as you are able to learn about a wide range of subjects and learn new things practically every day.
So, people are learning many different things as they do the Ohenro?
Well, it’s my personal perspective, but you should know culture surrounding the Ohenro first. There is a really strong sense of Ohenro culture on Shikoku and this affects interactions on the island. Some international travelers who come here may have little overall traveling experience abroad and everyone of course has their own way of thinking about things. It is important to introduce people to this culture as well as knowing which area you are going and prepare accordingly. It’s important that people know why Japan is unique within Asia and why Shikoku is different and unique as well.
I have travelled with and guided a lot of Japanese tourists as well over these 6 years. Of course, many Japanese tourists know the basic information and culture surrounding the Ohenro, so it’s not an important thing to stress to them. International tourists are different. When you explain things in one way, you may get questions that you would never get from a Japanese tourist. So, it’s important to give good detailed information.
